Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore (formerly, University of Indore) was established in 1964 by an Act of Legislature of Madhya Pradesh. The University is supported by the State Government and the University Grant Commission, New Delhi. The University has been incorporated in the Commonwealth Year Book (Volume 3, pp1740-42, 1990). It has been bestowed with the Centre of Excellence award by the Govt. of Madhya Pradesh. Recently, the University has been awarded “Centre of Excellence” in e-Management by UGC.

The University has thirty two University Teaching Departments imparting education in frontline areas of Physical Education Computers, IT, Engineering, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Education and Management etc. It has more than one hundred fifty faculty members, around seven thousand students on the campus, 200 affiliated colleges and more than one lakh eighty thousand students enrolled in all. The University teaching departments have a multi-disciplinary approach. The faculty is well qualified and the infrastructure is constantly upgraded. Computer Science, Electronics, Education, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Business Management, Business Economics, and International Business are typical of its high profile programmes. The University has earned a place for itself in the country on account of the high quality of its instructional programmes, research, consultancy, extension activities and self-supported programmes.

The University has an Educational Multimedia Research Centre for making educational television films for UGC-CEC Countrywide Classroom Programme and training/educational video material, functioning since 1991. The centre has produced more than 950 films so far, several of which have won awards.

An Inter University Consortium for Atomic Energy facilities was established in 1991 in the campus itself by U.G.C.
The University has well-equipped facilities of Sports Activities, Play Grounds, Gymnasium etc. to bring out the sporting talent of the students. It has a separate teaching department of physical education offering graduation, post graduation, M.Phil and PhD programs. The University offers selective Hostel facilities to outstation students. It has four girls and four boys hostels catering to the requirement of students studying in UTDs. Every effort is made to provide accommodation to girls students. However, the boy’s students are provided hostel facilities based on availability.

The administrative block of the University is situated at Nalanda Campus in the heart of the city at R.N.T. Marg. All the academic departments are situated at Takshashila Campus on Khandwa Road. The city, being compact, public transport is available most of the times from the main parts of the city to the academic campus.

SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (SOPE)


Life Sketch


School of Physical Education (SOPE), DAVV, Indore is a pioneer institute in central India serving the cause of the profession over 19 years. Under the scheme of University Grant Commission, Delhi, it was established in the year 1990 and runs under the faculty of Physical Education of DAVV Indore. The course offered that time was B.Sc. in Physical Education, Health Education and sports. The course was renamed as B.P.E. (Bachelor in Physical Education) in the year 1994-95 and the first batch of B.P.E. passed in the year 1997.


The School of Physical Education started the post graduation course, M.P.Ed. (Master of Physical Education) in the year 1993-94 on self-finance basis and the first batch of M.P.Ed.  had completed their course in the year 1995. The nomenclature of the course was changed to M.P.E. as per U.G.C. guideline in 2000-2001.

The School of Physical Education has successfully pursued academic excellence & quality leadership to prepare teachers in the field of Physical department has produced more than 45 NET and 6 JRF qualified students. Today the department is also successfully running Ph.D programmes. About 20 Ph.D. have been produced by this university under the faculty of Physical Education guided by the faculty of SOPE. The department has dedicated and well qualified faculty including four Professors, one Senior Lecturer and two Lecturers. 


Aims and Objectives

The aim of the institute is to prepare professional leaders of Physical Education who will serve the Nation by their professional knowledge and skill. For the purpose of attaining the above aim the following objectives are to be given specific attention:-

1.    To meet the need of the professional leaders needed by the institutes of Physical Education schools and colleges.
2.    To develop heath consciousness among people through the leaders of physical education.
3.    To provide scientific professional service to the workers of different factories and members of different health clubs.
4.    To develop the personality through Physical Education and Sports.
5.    To practically implement the slogan “Sports For All” through professional leaders.
6.    To provide Health and Physical fitness Consultancy to the people of the society.
